The Grass Is Always Greener PartIV
aka Ape Shall Never Kill Ape

Definitely not going to be the only post about Bape for sure, but i gotta start somewhere.
Its been about 12 years on since the birth of the label, and its still re-inventing itself and staying on the scene. Nigo started "a Bathing Ape" label just so he and his pals could have tees and clothing designed and meade just they way they wanted. And so it went from making a few pieces to give away to friends and fam at private DJ parties, to the discovery of how exclusitivity can turn the underground style-scene around. With his mentor Hiroshi Fujiwara, he created the label "Very Ape" in UK with the Gimme5 crew. Using imagery from the cult film "Planet of the Apes", Nigo sought to make people think of what his clothes are really trying to say. Was it just a movie fan tee? Nigo's message has always been a Japanese phrase, translated loosely as "a bathing ape in lukewarm water". It a snipe at the youths of today as being "too comfortable" with their lives, bathing in lukewarm water and not being able to withstand the harshness of "cold water", a reference to society in general. Its a comment on how they lack imagination and need guidance on everything they do.

This reference is definitely not lost on the wearer. Its always been thought of as an "in-joke" to own and wear a Bape tee, since we are in fact being dictated by someone(ie Nigo) of what to wear, what is cool. We are in fact the "bathing ape" that Nigo is calling out. Back in the days, to wear the tee is to get his joke. Hence the essence of self parody adds to the enigma of the label. The 2nd ingredient of what defines and makes the label so successful is exclusitivity. Back in Japan from his experience with the Hit and Run store (now Hideout)in London, Nigo started the Nowhere shop in the backstreets of Harajuku with sk8thing and Jun Takahashi(Undercover). The non-descript shop (now known as Bapexclusive)was minimalistic to say the least, away from main human traffic and hard as hell to find...which suited Nigo just fine. Once word of his ultra-rare clothing spread like wildfire amongst the "in" crowd, queues started to form infront of the store way before opening hours(does this sound familiar yet?). People started to ask about where and how to find the shop and get hold of a tee, or anything from Bape. Of course the store built up the hype by limiting the sale of tees to 1 per customer, in your own size, and only if the staff felt that they wanted to sell it to you. These days, thankfully, the limitations are no longer in place. you can purchase multiple items....thats if the hordes of people in the queue havent bought it up yet (thank you hypebeasts).

Thats enough prose for the moment, i'll write more when i get the time...but you get the idea of how the "hype" in today's streetwear scene comes about. Its not through the work of one man per se, but he sure as hell had a big part in it. Right, now back to topic, which is about my collection of tees....

The early Ape tees were printed using off-the-shelf tees, mainly Champion and Oneita brands, and putting the Ape label over the original tee label.

Bathing ape "in lukewarm water" design printed on Oneita tee, tag reads the famous line "Ape shall never kill ape".

Check out the graphic, one of very few vintage tees that has original meaning of the brand, "bathing ape in lukewarm water".

Very Ape tee made in England, tag reads "I'm very ape and very nice"

Bathing ape "Generals" design printed on Champion tee.

Theres plenty of other tags since Nigo has created so many diffusion lines, which means lots of different tags, labels and names. I'll post them in future updates where possible. Until next time, ciao

PS: Baby "Milo" cup is straight off crazy eh? "Stop your cheap imitations!"

Re-invent

I love the Nike Woven, so simple, stylish and comfortable. The Footscape? unique and ahead of its time...i just didn't like the way the laces hung out. But both shoes rank high on my "like" list. Now these 2 are being re-invented by the man ahead of his time, Hiroshi Fujiwara. So the end product is his Frankenstein of a shoe, the hTM Footscape Woven. It sure is unique alright, chop and change of 2 classics, but i much prefer his personal black pair, shown in his profile shot.

Jackets...for mobiles
I've always had the notion that Japan is a part of heaven that is ultra-cool, much like your mall has that special corner for electronic gadgets/luxury fashion/food/home & living etc that has stuff you absolutely would love to possess. The Japs must also be a bunch of people who love to do anything together, how else to explain the avalance of collaborations out there in shopping-land? As if i needed any more convincing, DoCoMo's niche off-shoot DatMo has more cool stuff...for jazzing up your mobile phones.

Nike Dunk SB Shanghai 2 "xiao-long-bao"
First the pics

Don't you just love the nicknames we give to shoes? Following the good reception to the first rendition of the Shanghai SB, comes the next Nike offering for the Chinese market.
I'll just do a rough translation for our english speaking folks. The article previews the upcoming Shanghai exclusive Dunk SB footwear, and explains the idea behind the design. Seems to me someone in Nike loves the food in Shanghai, and what better way to remind ourselves of a fave ciy than its food. The "xiao-long-bao" (literal translation being "little dumplings in a basket") is a world famous delicacy and a staple in Chinese Dim Sum menus. Its a steamed soup dumpling, a bite-sized delight made of a thin layer of dough steamed in a traditional woven bamboo steamer. One bite of the dumpling oozes dripping hot soup and delicious dumpling fillings. Ok, enough of food(making me hungry), back to the shoe...
Henceforth, the shoe captures everything about the dumpling, from the steamer to the dumpling itself. The tongue tag shows an image of a tea-cup, suggesting the Chinese tradition of having afternoon tea; the side panels of the shoe mimick the woven texture of the bamboo steamer; and the overall color is similar to the dumpling itself.

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER (PART III)
aka It takes a little more to be...Supreme

The next installment of my collecting ways dwells on the king of NY street - Supreme. I've mentioned how my collection has little "themes", whether it be prints, materials, colors, artists or sentimental reasons (peep the previous entries on stussy and unkle). Back in early millenia (time sure flies) Supreme released their take on the iconic Nike Air Force 1. For the ignorant, the AF1 was nick-named "uptowns", particular in use in NYC. So James Jebbia and co. named theirs the "Down Low"...for being on the down low (if y'know what i mean). It was probably a pre-cursor to a possible Nike collaboration then, but i doubt the butter-soft leather quality made for mass-release can be matched by Oregon.

My black pair of Down Low is worn, but leather is still prestine. Soft leather, plush cushioning, leather insole...and from the 2nd pic, yes(!) monogrammed detail on the inside of the uppers. I believe 2 series of the Down Lows were released, featuring different colorways an slighly different quality(the 1st being better, according to some).

Supreme also released the Mid Towns, a mid-cut version of the Nike Dunk, much earlier than Nike's own release of the much-ignored Dunk mids. Here's my DS pair:

Both versions of the Supreme sneakers feature the brand imprint on the outsole and sole as well as a surprise for the eagle-eyed: Supreme changed the "star" protrusions on the forefoot outsole into, get this, dollar-signs!

As for tees, well, they don't need much introduction do they? I personally don't have much of them, but in keeping with the "theme":

stand proud

20-foot installation of the brand of liquor famous for its silhouette. An absolut happy birthday!

Its National Day once again...feeling a little patriotic and nostalgic. So props to our local boy who does what few can achieve - swim across the English Channel. It wasn't the timing he was after, just doing it was enough. Thanks for doing us proud and not giving up the brain-numbing swim!

"so do you think he asked for French fries over at the other end?" =)

Miss Me?
You know how sometimes you wanna do something, something u really want done, but didn't really do it cos you know, you somehow thought that you might be able to do it sometime later? now say that really-really quick
No? ok, nevermind. Been neglecting the blog due to heavy workload, y'know, the usual 60hr week(not including the weekends of course).

Cool Ad

Done by TWBA/Vancouver for Black Tower Home Security. It features a billboard covered with easily-taken stuff, taking advantage of human nature to pilfer, only to reveal the message for the client. Pure genius. Read more here.
i'm just waiting for the ad-people in condom makers to think of "People Fuck" billboards...

ART
I ain't no Arts major, but i do know sculptures are darn hard to make. Life-like ones of Hollywood stars? even tougher. Blu-Tack sculptures of stars? definitely more than a buck!

and it all comes raining down...
Sony filmed a commercial on thehilly streets of SF sometime ago, flooding the neighborhood with bouncing rubber balls. Awesome sight. No balls were harmed in this ad...but some did went missing.

I love the pic with the "Stop" sign...silent irony

Lovely Dilemma
Must be ages since i last blogged about Paris Hilton. (but u know i'd do anything to irk my buddy-buddy-good pal Ibby, heh)
So Paris (Latsis, the fiance who is a Greek heir of shipping fortunes i can't begin to count) gives Paris (Hilton, the fiancee who is the heiress of the Hilton empire who goes to parties like its her job) a 4.5 million dollar engagement ring. I know you kids can't begin to crunch the numbers, so just peep the pic
ITS HUGE
So anyway, Paris gal decides that the rock is too, big, heavy and painful to wear, and complains to Paris dude. Paris dude thus does what any dude would do for his damsel in distress....he gets Paris gal a platinum Cartier ring instead for everyday use.
Damn. Wish i had that sort of dilemma
