The Grass Is Always Greener PartIV
aka Ape Shall Never Kill Ape

Definitely not going to be the only post about Bape for sure, but i gotta start somewhere.
Its been about 12 years on since the birth of the label, and its still re-inventing itself and staying on the scene. Nigo started "a Bathing Ape" label just so he and his pals could have tees and clothing designed and meade just they way they wanted. And so it went from making a few pieces to give away to friends and fam at private DJ parties, to the discovery of how exclusitivity can turn the underground style-scene around. With his mentor Hiroshi Fujiwara, he created the label "Very Ape" in UK with the Gimme5 crew. Using imagery from the cult film "Planet of the Apes", Nigo sought to make people think of what his clothes are really trying to say. Was it just a movie fan tee? Nigo's message has always been a Japanese phrase, translated loosely as "a bathing ape in lukewarm water". It a snipe at the youths of today as being "too comfortable" with their lives, bathing in lukewarm water and not being able to withstand the harshness of "cold water", a reference to society in general. Its a comment on how they lack imagination and need guidance on everything they do.

This reference is definitely not lost on the wearer. Its always been thought of as an "in-joke" to own and wear a Bape tee, since we are in fact being dictated by someone(ie Nigo) of what to wear, what is cool. We are in fact the "bathing ape" that Nigo is calling out. Back in the days, to wear the tee is to get his joke. Hence the essence of self parody adds to the enigma of the label. The 2nd ingredient of what defines and makes the label so successful is exclusitivity. Back in Japan from his experience with the Hit and Run store (now Hideout)in London, Nigo started the Nowhere shop in the backstreets of Harajuku with sk8thing and Jun Takahashi(Undercover). The non-descript shop (now known as Bapexclusive)was minimalistic to say the least, away from main human traffic and hard as hell to find...which suited Nigo just fine. Once word of his ultra-rare clothing spread like wildfire amongst the "in" crowd, queues started to form infront of the store way before opening hours(does this sound familiar yet?). People started to ask about where and how to find the shop and get hold of a tee, or anything from Bape. Of course the store built up the hype by limiting the sale of tees to 1 per customer, in your own size, and only if the staff felt that they wanted to sell it to you. These days, thankfully, the limitations are no longer in place. you can purchase multiple items....thats if the hordes of people in the queue havent bought it up yet (thank you hypebeasts).

Thats enough prose for the moment, i'll write more when i get the time...but you get the idea of how the "hype" in today's streetwear scene comes about. Its not through the work of one man per se, but he sure as hell had a big part in it. Right, now back to topic, which is about my collection of tees....

The early Ape tees were printed using off-the-shelf tees, mainly Champion and Oneita brands, and putting the Ape label over the original tee label.

Bathing ape "in lukewarm water" design printed on Oneita tee, tag reads the famous line "Ape shall never kill ape".

Check out the graphic, one of very few vintage tees that has original meaning of the brand, "bathing ape in lukewarm water".

Very Ape tee made in England, tag reads "I'm very ape and very nice"

Bathing ape "Generals" design printed on Champion tee.

Theres plenty of other tags since Nigo has created so many diffusion lines, which means lots of different tags, labels and names. I'll post them in future updates where possible. Until next time, ciao

PS: Baby "Milo" cup is straight off crazy eh? "Stop your cheap imitations!"

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER (PART III)
aka It takes a little more to be...Supreme

The next installment of my collecting ways dwells on the king of NY street - Supreme. I've mentioned how my collection has little "themes", whether it be prints, materials, colors, artists or sentimental reasons (peep the previous entries on stussy and unkle). Back in early millenia (time sure flies) Supreme released their take on the iconic Nike Air Force 1. For the ignorant, the AF1 was nick-named "uptowns", particular in use in NYC. So James Jebbia and co. named theirs the "Down Low"...for being on the down low (if y'know what i mean). It was probably a pre-cursor to a possible Nike collaboration then, but i doubt the butter-soft leather quality made for mass-release can be matched by Oregon.

My black pair of Down Low is worn, but leather is still prestine. Soft leather, plush cushioning, leather insole...and from the 2nd pic, yes(!) monogrammed detail on the inside of the uppers. I believe 2 series of the Down Lows were released, featuring different colorways an slighly different quality(the 1st being better, according to some).

Supreme also released the Mid Towns, a mid-cut version of the Nike Dunk, much earlier than Nike's own release of the much-ignored Dunk mids. Here's my DS pair:

Both versions of the Supreme sneakers feature the brand imprint on the outsole and sole as well as a surprise for the eagle-eyed: Supreme changed the "star" protrusions on the forefoot outsole into, get this, dollar-signs!

As for tees, well, they don't need much introduction do they? I personally don't have much of them, but in keeping with the "theme":

no chain, no chain

just another day at the office
It was just like watching MJ go through The Shot...the only difference was that Lance Armstrong's moment was far longer, and probably sweeter. Lance wants to end it on a high, just like the other living legend of sports, Wayne Gretzky. Yesterday's le Tour finale is definitely a formality, the drama was already over the day before, where a "possesed" Armstrong threw everything he had to take the stage win - his final stage win of his career. He is already amongst the rarified-heavenly group of living legends, the ones who will almost be taken for granted of a win just by turning up in a match-up, a tournament, a race. He needn't have even sweated out like he did...he could've cruised. Yet i've never seen a more inspiring moment as he pushed himself further, riding out of his seat, pumping his thighs like pistons as he increased his lead time...just to, as he says, get to his kids waiting at the finishing that much sooner. The rest of the tour panted and gasp at the finishing line, Lance smiled and was fresh like "one more?". Just the image we wanted to leave of him.

My fave quote as he effortlessly finished one of the stages: "No chain...(i was cruising) like i had no chains"
Definitely a man for the world

The Grass is Always Greener (Part II)
This one's for the Unkle/Futura2K fans out there. Mr Mcgurr's "pointy men" (as he puts it) grew from signature penmanship to iconography. Heres my tiny stash:

Clockwise from Left: Surrender x Unkle black; white; ZooYork Futura crew; Futura x Salem Innovations Tour.

Stussy x Futura

Bathing Ape x Unkle Sounds "creepsta" series
A lovely print, synthetic stylee, dope till it hurts.

The Grass is Always Greener

Someone asked me once in one of my auctions for a stussy tee, "are you a stussy collector? i'm trying to get started"

The answer to that is "yes", but it sure didn't start overnight for me. I mean, the brand started out innocously, pretty low key, not too in your face...besides, theres not that high of a chance for surfing to be big in equatorial Singapore anyway. The only waves to be made were the ones in your bath tub. But the simple graphic tees, big Hawaiian shirts and witty style does seem a little "different" from the others out there. Over the years, i get a couple of tees on-and-off.
And then the Japanese chapter stores started doing their retro craze, and mad collabs. I didn't get the tees just coz it was a collab, it was for the cooler graphics that others couldn't match. It was for the vibe that stirs me. The kind that connects the designer to the wearer. Unfortunately, i'm not that rich enough to buy all the cool tees in the world. I'm not like those nouveau rich kids that simply "buy a collection" as and when they like. Fortunately on the flip side, it means theres always a hunt for that elusive something which them "hype kids" will never understand or get.

Head out to town, in probably any urban city, and chances are, theres some kid out there sporting the latest, hippest, hottest cap, tee, jeans, sneakers. Well, i admit, i'm like that too...only difference is, i only wear the ones which i myself consider to be the coolest. My friends say i'm nuts when they know how many tees i got stashed up. They think i'm nutter than nuts when i buy tees for certain theme that i'm gunning for. (actually i get a kick when i irritate them sometimes, heh)
I've shown my love for skull tees quite sometime back...here's the rest of the Stussy stash:

"Big Boys" theme
W)taps x Stussy vs US Stussy retro

"Rock my gold for the ladies" theme
Japan-only release vs US Stussy retro

"Spray Can" theme
Top: Stussy Customade by Slick
L: Subware spray head
R: Subware front-n-back spray can by Stash

"Stussy World Tribe" party tee 2001 - one of the Holy Grails of my collection
L: 2001 World Tribe L/S tee, with "Increase the Peace" on sleeve
R: 2001 World Tribe S/S tee

See how many familiar collaboration icons u can make out!

Notice how many of those "hype" kids got Supreme packs? I couldn't care less, not when they can't recognise my Stussy x Lowe Alpine!

"Stussy on the Lowe"
"8 ball" key ring not part of the pack, but a special gift
"Stussy Corps" mobile pouch

And whats a Stussy collection without something for the feet?

The One that probably jump-started it all. The sleeper hit. The "nobody wanted them" shoes. The first of many Stussy x Nike footwear. Deadstock. Stussy x Huarache runner. Avocado Gold.

Alrite.
Guess thats enough for the update. For those collectors out there, we all know we would be nothing if it wasn't for friends, contacts, and trustworthy sellers. So a big "word up" to my buddy and fellow Stussy-fiend, aka "achtung-baby". Forever indebted to ya.
